The Day of Breakthroughs

So we seem to be adjusting well to having a new addition in the Bethancourt household. Yesterday was a good day for me/us. It also marked several significant breakthroughs.

Breakthrough #1: Yesterday I ventured out of the house to the mall with both of them by myself for the first time. No assistance from hubby or mother/mother-in-law.

This turned out much better than I expected. By the time we had breakfast, I made myself look slightly decent, got John dressed, fed Anna and made sure her diaper was clean, packed our double duty diaper bag with snacks and water for John it was 10:30. We started the morning at 8 AM. So it took us 2 1/2 hours to get out the door but we DID! I was actually able to run an errand at Target, then we went to the play castle, then I swung by Macy's to look for a wallet. No one had a melt down or diaper blow-out and we made it home just in time for Anna to eat again. You forget what it's like living life in 3 hour feeding increments. Man, it's much better when you don't have to race the clock constantly but that's our lot for now and I'm OK with that.

Breakthrough #2: John actually enjoyed himself at the play castle today. Hallelujah, praise the Lord forevermore.

My sweet little boy's personality is such that he has always been very cautious and observant, a little shy and very serious about his personal space. Now these are admirable traits but when it comes to playing in large play areas/parks with kids of different ages, his personality type clashes with those situations big time. I have left the play castle in the mall many a time very close to tears because John would not leave my legs and explore and go "wear himself out" (which is usually the purpose of the trip). Instead of giving him a place to be free he would just sit next to me or beg me to do everything with him and, goodness gracious, if a kid accidentally touched or bumped him......forget it. John just couldn't recover from that and we'd usually have to leave.

But today was different...I saw my little baby as a little boy. He took some risks, took off exploring by himself, laughed a lot, got bumped by numerous big kids and just shrugged it off and kept moving. I watched him in awe yesterday. He had fun! And I had fun watching him. And last night at dinner John couldn't stop talking about the "CAS-OL!" (castle) and how he went "UNDER!" YAY, John!

Breakthrough #3: Anna seems to finally be recovering from her unfortunate cosmetic maladies.
The little lady was born with a weepy eye due to a blocked tear duct. Then at 2 weeks she broke out with some FIERCE baby acne. I mean, all over, everywhere...bumps galore. Then, after about 2 weeks, the acne was clearing up but she started to get the cradle cap (or cradle crap, as I keep saying). Crusty head everywhere. John never had cradle cap at all or the baby acne to the same extent Anna has had it. But now we're on the road to Cutie-ville, population 1. And just in time, because little mama is starting to smile! Time to bust out the camera again!
